By UBO staff writer Elton John is one of the world’s best-known entertainers, having sold over 250 million records worldwide with 35 albums going gold and 25 reaching platinum status. The 62-year-old
ohn, who lives in an openly gay relationship with his 42-year old partner David Furnish, has been quoted as making potentially controversial statements during a just completed trip to Ukraine in support of his Elton John AIDS Foundation.   An Australian newspaper reports that John said after the visit that he wants to adopt a 14-month-old boy he met at an orphanage. "David and I have always talked about adoption. David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said 'no' because I am 62 and I think because of the traveling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn't be fair for the child," John was reported as saying by Sky News. "But having seen Lev today, I would love to adopt him. "I don't know how we do that but he has stolen my heart. And he has stolen David's heart and it would be wonderful if we can have a home. I've changed my mind today." John enjoys a very positive public reputation worldwide for his charitable work on AIDS. He has donated large amounts of his own funds to the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), the singer established in the United States in 1992 and the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF-UK), founded in London in 1993. The two organizations function separately but pursue similar missions – the support of innovative HIV prevention programs, efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, and direct care and support services for people living with HIV/AIDS. Jointly, they have raised over $150 million that has gone to support projects in 55 countries around the world. In addition to funding dedicated to programs in its home country, EJAF-US awards grants to community-based projects in the Americas and the Caribbean. EJAF-UK makes grants for programs in the UK, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Over the years, EJAF-UK has provided funding for projects in Ukraine totaling several million dollars.[For more on the John foundation, go to www.ejaf.com UBO contacted a Ukrainian consultant who has been involved in child adoption cases for several years. The consultant, speaking on condition on anonymity, told UBO, “Under Ukrainian law, only a couple may adopt a child and the current law presumes that a couple is defined as one male and one female. Because Elton John is well-known for his charitable work in Ukraine and because he has very high level connections here, he might be able to accomplish an adoption but it would have to be done very quietly and would almost certainly involve a decision at the highest levels of the government.” Just how serious John and his male partner are about adopting the Ukrainian toddler is unclear at this time. However, should they go forward with formal adoption procedures, it is likely that questions regarding the adoption of youngsters by gays would arise as they have in other countries.  [In keeping with UBO policy, we solicit your comments on this matter.
