KYIV, Apr 22, 2013 (UBO) – The candidacy of Petro Poroshenko for the post of Kyiv mayor is supported by two of the three opposition political parties - Batkivshchyna and Svoboda. The position of UDAR is still uncertain, the Kommersant Ukraine reported with reference to its sources.

“Poroshenko has held private meetings with the leaders of all opposition parties, including with Vitali Klitschko. During these meetings, Poroshenko met with support. But it was said that if Vitali Klitschko at the last moment still decides to run for mayor, Petro Poroshenko will not participate in the election. He will not work to split the opposition,” said a source close to Poroshenko.

Sources in Batkivshchyna claim that they intend to nominate Poroshenko, as the party has no other ranking candidates.

“Mykola Katerynchuk will not be a candidate. Firstly, he is in conflict with Oleksandr Turchynov; secondly, his idea of naming several opposition candidates, followed by calling back all in favor of the one with the highest rating, does not fit - it plays into the authority's hand. There must be a single candidate who would pass this way from the beginning to the end,” the source said.

People's deputies Oleksandr Bryhynets and Serhiy Pashynsky (both of Batkivshchyna) reported that the name of the agreed candidate is only known to the leaders of the opposition parliamentary parties.

“At a meeting of the faction (Batkivshchyna - Ed.) Arseniy Yatseniuk said that by the end of this week a single candidate should be agreed,” Bryhynets said, adding, “I think the decision has been already taken and in the near future it will be made public.” In turn, MP Volodymyr Bondarenko noted that “a meeting of the faction leaders will be held this week, and it will announce the results of the negotiations.”

Representatives of Svoboda did not confirm the statement by Poroshenko on the completion of talks on a common candidate for mayor of the capital city. “Where Poroshenko has got such information - he should be asked himself,” MP Oleksiy Kaida said. According to him, Svoboda is ready to consider the candidacy of Poroshenko if Batkivshchyna confirms that he is a single candidate from this political force.

The party UDAR did not confirm Poroshenko's statement on calling a common candidate for the post of mayor, saying that he was “misunderstood”. “Poroshenko said that the opposition had agreed that a single candidate will be nominated for the mayor, and it's really true,” MP Valeriy Karpuntsov (UDAR) said, adding, “There should be a kind of roadmap with agreed spheres in which representatives of certain opposition parties would work.”

According to the Kommersant, this roadmap will be a joint document with the working title Principles of Nominating a Single Candidate.
