US provides $5 mln to promote fair elections in Ukraine

KYIV, September 20, 2012 (UBO) – The United States has funded activities to promote fair parliamentary elections in Ukraine at USD 5 million, Philip Gordon, US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, said on Thursday in Washington in his opening speech at a two-day Special Edition Roundtable entitled, “Providing a Pre 2012 Parliamentary Elections Report Card” as part of the Ukraine's Quest for Mature Nation Statehood Roundtable series.

 

“The United States has provided approximately USD 5 million in funding for activities to promote free and fair parliamentary election,” the official noted. Gordon said it is about supporting a long term observation by over 260 Ukrainian and Russians monitors and short term monitoring by 3 000 domestic observes as well as parallel vote calculations and voters exit polls.

 

“We strengthen in the capacity of the Ukraine Central election commission to training election management bodies, training lowers and administration courts judges to ensure protection of the voters and the candidate's rights and encouraging a promotion of public debates engagement in the electoral process through a voter education campaign,” the US Assistant Secretary of State noted.

 

According to Gordon, the conclusions on the compliance of the parliamentary elections with democratic standards are based not only on their compliance on the voting day, but during the three months preceding the vote.

 

In this context, he noted US concerns about "reports of harassment of independent opposition media by local authorities, tax authorities and prosecutor's office" and the situation with the disconnection of the TVi channel from a cable network. He also called on the Ukrainian government to tackle these issues.
