ay in Doha, Stakhovsky extracted sweet revenge as he sent 4th seed Youzhny to an early exit from the Qatar ExxonMobil Open with a 7-6, 6-2 trouncing. In an hour and 45 minutes, Stakhovsky took the measure of Youzhny, who appeared to have none of his old spark and drive. For Youzhny, five double faults and a failure to convert any break points added up to a straight sets walloping. Stakhovsky, who turns 24 on January 6, could be on his way to becoming Ukraine’s first young male standout in years. However, his savoring of the victory over Youzhny could last only until he meets Rafael Nadal who, in spite of some problems lately, is still a formidable test for any but the best in the men’s game. Stakhovsky stats Born in Kyiv, the 6’4”, right-handed Stakhovksy now calls Prostejov, Czech Republic home. He says he prefers his tennis on hard surface and has been playing since he was six years old. The record suggests that doubles is not high on Stakhovsky’s list of things to do, but he has shown consistent progress in singles over the last three years. In the ATP year-end rankings, he moved up from 262nd in 2007 to 74th in 2008 and 60th in 2009.
