Yushchenko: Russia Must Extradite Poisoning Suspects

2009/9/28 15:52:23
KYIV, Sept. 28 (Ukrainian News/UBO) – President Viktor Yushchenko said in a television interview on Sunday that he will insist that Russian authorities extradite persons believed to be Russia who are
uspects in the 2004 poisoning that left the president’s facial features permanently marked and his internal organs damaged. During an interview with TV 1+1, Yushchenko claimed that Ukrainian investigators know the identity and location of the suspects and that their extradition from Russia to Ukraine would be the final element in bringing them to trial in Ukraine. Ukraine ’s Prosecutor General has sent requests to the Prosecutor General of Russia requesting questioning of Volodymyr Satsiuk, the former first deputy chairman of the State Security Service of Ukraine, about the alleged attempt on Yushchenko’s life that has remained unresolved for over five years. An earlier request for the extradition of Satsiuk to Ukraine was refused by Russia. The president has long held strong opinions about the poisoning that left his face pockmarked, weakened his health and appears destined to require frequent medical treatment for the rest of his life. Many in Ukraine believe the poisoning was an assassination attempt that would have succeeded except for treatment the president received in Austria after the incident. In a 2007 interview with The Times of London, Yushchenko was quoted as saying, “Three laboratories in the world were producing dioxin of this formula. It is very easy to determine the origin of the substance; there is nothing magical about it. Two laboratories provided samples but not the Russian side. This of course limits the possibilities of the investigation process.” Yushchenko added at that time, “I personally talked to the Russian President about it. Unfortunately, there is no response to this issue whatsoever from the Russian side.” After the election that eventually brought Yushchenko to office, Satsiuk and a deputy were alleged to have fled to Russia where Ukrainian security officials believe they still reside.
