In the course of the working trop to Sumy region, President Petro Poroshenko opened the Cossack Cross to the Fighters for the Freedom of Ukraine on the territory of the Resurrection Church of the Holy Resurrection Cathedral of the Sumy Diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyiv Patriarchate.

“We are standing in a truly historic place.  The Resurrection Church is a unique example of the Cossack Baroque built at the cost of the first Colonels of Sumy Herasym and Andriy Kondratyev. It was a true spiritual sanctuary for our ancestors. The whole world knew and respected the Ukrainian Cossacks. They were worthy players on the geopolitical map of the past centuries,” Poroshenko said.

“Modern defenders of independence and territorial integrity of our state proved and prove that the Ukrainian army is battle-worthy, has a strong morale and can oppose Russian aggression. We are opening the Cossack Cross to the Fighters for the Freedom of Ukraine. It is a symbol of inextricable connection of various generations of defenders of Ukraine. The Cossack blood, courage and victory are raging in the veins of our defenders,” the President noted.

Poroshenko took part in the prayer for Ukraine and spoke with parents of ATO participant Andriy Reuta who was killed defending Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

“I pray for the Lord to send Ukraine a single local church, for us to unite. It is the most important thing. Ukraine needs unity today,” Poroshenko said adding that he would do everything necessary for that.
