LONDON, Nov 27, 2014 (UBO) – Responding to a statement by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius that Syria and Ukraine are “totally separate issues,” Nomura Int’l economist Timothy Ash offered the following comments at 10:03 today:

We have now had pretty similar statements from France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK - with the likes of Hungary suggesting that they will defer to the decisions of Germany et al. So it seems very likely at this stage when EU leaders meet in the third week of December to decide on rolling over sanctions on Russia [with reference to] Crimea and Minsk II implementation that they will be rolled over for a further 6 months from the end of January. There had been talk of a 12-month rollover, but the reversion to a 6 month timetable will be viewed as the compromise/concession to the fact that the September 1 ceasefire deal has worked better than previous ones - albeit several score of people have still been killed since in what is still a tense environment on the ground in Donbas. Russian officials have also suggested recently that they assume sanctions will remain for the medium term at least.
