U.S. begins loosening regulations on export of LNG to non-FTA countries

With huge surpluses of LNG now available in the United States market, is it possible this could provide at less some part of the independence from Russian exports that Ukraine needs?


 

 

 

 

 

 

 

WASHINGTON -- The Energy Department has issued a conditional authorization for the Alaska LNG Project, LLC to export domestically produced LNG to countries that do not have a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the U.S, the World Oil website reported on May 29.

 

Subject to environmental review and final regulatory approval, Alaska LNG, in the Nikiski Area of the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska, is authorized to export LNG up to the equivalent of 2.55 Bcfd of natural gas for a period of 30 years.

UBO Commentary: The specific authorization reported above appears to be of most immediate interest to users in Asia. However, this decision is regarded as a harbinger of wider developments that appear likely to lead to substantial supplies of U.S. LNG becoming available from more easily accessible U.S. sources.

 

For some countries, energy independence is merely a desirable policy option. For Ukraine, progress toward energy independence is an absolute national security imperative.
