Tim Ash asks a critical question for President Poroshenko and the Ukrainian people

To any regular reader of Ukraine Business Online it is no news that we value and frequently publish commentary provided by noted London economist Timothy Ash. Most of his comments are quite lengthy but his most recent submission is one of the shortest – and most important ever.

LONDON, Oct 30, 2014 (UBO) – In response to the alarming report that in spite of the alleged ceasefire agreement in place with Russia and the pro-Russia separatists that seven Ukrainian troops have been shot and killed within the last 24 hours, Standard Bank economist Timothy Ash provided the following comment at 12:53 PM today:

Against this backdrop, how can any Ukrainian leader cut a deal with Putin over the future status of Crimea, which would leave Crimea in Russian hands?

UBC Commentary: We value Ash’s commentary on economic issues but we value even more his simple and elegant words above that say all that needs to be said on this subject. We can only hope that President Poroshenko and other top leaders are fully in compliance with these thoughts that we believe reflect the ideas – moreover, the demands – of the Ukrainian people. What better time than now to remind Vladimir Putin that there will never be real peace between Ukraine and Russia until such time as the stipulations of the Budapest Memorandum – to which Russia was a signatory – are reflected on the ground in return of the territorial integrity that that agreement called for. That means the Ukrainian flag flying in all of Donetsk, Luhansk - and Crimea.
