Though the situation in Eastern Ukraine remains extremely tense, we are grateful to report that Jewish groups like the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel are still able to provide direct assistance to those in need in the East.

The National Council Supporting Eurasian Jewry, Washington, D.C., provided the following Weekly News Update to its membership today:

Fighting in Eastern Ukraine continued this week, with Ukrainian government forces making steady advances against separatist-held cities. As the separatists lose ground, world attention has focused on a huge truck convoy from Russia, part of which crossed into Ukraine this morning.

Russia claims the convoy contains only humanitarian aid, but the International Red Cross refused to escort the trucks, having been granted access to examine only a small part of its cargo. Fears persist that the "aid convoy" is a ruse for sending arms and supplies to the region's pro-Russian rebels.

Ukraine's security chief called the convoy's entry a "direct invasion" of Ukraine, and the EU termed it a violation of Ukraine's sovereignty. Nevertheless, Ukraine has pledged not to attack the convoy, fearing a direct military response from Russia.

Though the situation in Eastern Ukraine remains extremely tense, we are grateful to report that Jewish groups like the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the Jewish Agency for Israel are still able to provide direct assistance to those in need in the East.
