From RFE/RL, Apr 6, 2018 The United States has imposed sanctions more than 20 members of Russia’s political and business elite who are thought to have close connections to President Vladimir Putin, a move Washington described as a response to Moscow’s “malign activity around the globe.” The announcement by the U.S. Treasury Department on April 6 includes some of the most prominent officials and magnates to be targeted by U.S. sanctions in connection with Moscow's activities, including its occupation of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula and the Kremlin's alleged meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Those hit with the latest sanctions include metals tycoon Oleg Deripaska, state-controlled gas giant Gazprom CEO Aleksei Miller, former Putin bodyguard and powerful security official Viktor Zolotov, and Putin's Security Council chief Nikolai Patrushev. Others include former prime minister and foreign intelligence chief Mikhail Fradkov, VTB bank chief Andrei Kostin, Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev, and tycoon Viktor Vekselberg. “The Russian government engages in a range of malign activity around the globe, including continuing to occupy Crimea and instigate violence in eastern Ukraine, supplying the Assad regime with material and weaponry as they bomb their own civilians, attempting to subvert Western democracies, and malicious cyber activities,” Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin said in a statement. Mnuchin said in the statement that the Russian government “operates for the disproportionate benefit of oligarchs and government elites,” and that “Russian oligarchs and elites who profit from this corrupt system will no longer be insulated from the consequences of their government’s destabilizing activities.” The new punitive measures come amid badly strained ties between Russia and the West that have deteriorated further over the poisoning of Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal in Britain last month -- a military-grade, nerve-agent attack that London and the United States blame on Moscow.
