Ukrainian Film Club @ Columbia University in commemoration of 84th anniversary of Holodomor, the genocidal famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933 will screen THE LIVING, 2008 director Serhii Bukovsky This documentary masterpiece is about the Holodomor, genocidal and deliberately organized famine of Ukrainians by the Soviet regime as it strove to build the communist “brave new word” free of classes, cultures, nations and, ultimately, humanity itself. Survivors’ accounts are intricately woven with the story of the Welsh journalist Gareth Jones whose reports on the catastrophe remained largely unheeded in the West. Through the creative genius of the director Serhii Bukosvky this account of one of the worst tragedies in modern European history becomes a triumphant affirmation of the invincibility of the human spirit in the face of evil. This celebrated documentary is an absolute must-see. ========================== For more information, contact: Dr. Yuri Shevchuk lecturer of Ukrainian language Department of Slavic Languages 1231 International Affairs Building 420 West 118th Street Columbia University New York, NY, 10027 phone: 212-854-6525
