UN Secretary General on visit to Ukraine

António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres was Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 as leader of the Socialist Party and went on to serve as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. He was the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from June 2005 to December 2015, and in October 2016 the United Nations General Assembly elected him by acclamation to become the next United Nations secretary-general. He succeeded Ban Ki-moon.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is paying an official visit to Ukraine today.

 

Among those he will be meeting today are the Ukrainian leadership and the UN Ukraine staff.

 

Having witnessed the suffering of the most vulnerable people on earth, in refugee camps and in war zones, the Secretary-General is determined to make human dignity the core of his work, and to serve as a peace broker, a bridge-builder and a promoter of reform and innovation.
